Tune in for DJ Shorty Smooth’s mid-morning World’s Largest Social Virtual Steppers Set from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. CST. In this two hour segment be ready for “inspired mixes” on a journey in slow jamz, R&B, old school hip hop and more. I caught up with DJ Shorty Smooth to gain some insight on his virtual set for new and seasoned steppers.

Virtual Stepper Sets

The World’s Largest Social Virtual Steppers Set was originally Mykel “DJ Shorty Smooth” Farr’s show on Clubsteppin.com. He calls it a virtual steppers set because steppers gather via internet and social media. People all over the country listen to his music and interact with each other. He has the Facebook group “The DJ Shorty Smooth Show.” Men ask women to dance and have virtual dances. Listeners talk about what’s going and about their feet dancing under office desks and chairs. Some even close the door, stand up, and dance.

This is not a Facebook Live broadcast although the flyer says “LIVE.” When Mykel started OhSoSmoothRadio.com in 2010, Facebook Live was not even available. Although Shorty Smooth was not interested or inclined to own a radio station, one of his listeners, Lawrence Wartley, from Detroit, Michigan, stroked a check and told him to give the people what they had been asking for the last 2 to 3 years.  He was moved to act and OhSoSmoothRadio.com was started.  So, “Live” means this is a real-time broadcast and everything that you hear is what is happening right then and there. Sometimes programmed music or prerecorded mixed shows aired at other times on the station.

DJ Shorty Smooth Music

DJ Shorty Smooth’s virtual set sessions are inspired musical selections. Music is based on how he feels that day. He may take you back with some 80s and 90s old school hip hop. Sometimes 90s R&B or you can hear current stepping music. He may even go way back with some 70s slow jamz. Shorty Smooth has played music nonstop since 1979. He has built a repertoire and music collection that can take you to many places. I wondered why he chose that time of day for his show. When I asked, he responded “I chose it for two reasons. It was a time that, most importantly, allowed me to be available to be a father to my son. Second, to maintain my client base for my audio/visual installation business.”
