Reading Time: 2 minutes

In my travels to step Chicago-style, I talk with many steppers in different cities about getting on stage – whether it’s about me getting on stage or them getting ready to enter a contest. These contest conversations keep me excited about contests year-round. Even at times when I don’t want to talk about contests, someone says something that’s got me all hot and bothered or contemplative again. I am a competitive person by nature and nothing will kill that spirit in me. I compete for different reasons than I’ll hold close to my chest. Those who know me well, know why I enter contests.

I think about some of the contest conversations within the last 30 days and, I smile and enjoy the memories of those moments. In this season, some relationships change, and partners know how to keep secrets. Some contest steppers collaborate behind the scenes even when competing in the same category. I am encouraged by new and old friends, instructors, and steppers alike. Here are tidbits of my conversations with different steppers. I’ll let you guess what I said versus what was said to me.

The Questions

  1. I am going to send a video. Please tell me what you think and what my partner and I should work on.
  2. Which category are you entering this year?
  3. Is Marcus Reynolds your partner?
  4. I’d like to ask you to be my partner.
  5. If I do enter the contest, my partner will be a surprise to you just like your partner will be a surprise to me.
  6. Just wait. If it is meant to be this year, your partner will come.
  7. Your dance has blown up. Are you competing at the World’s Largest Contest this year?
  8. If my partner and I were together in a relationship AND lived together, I’d be working on that chemistry every day.
  9. I’ll be traveling out of town for the next seven days to practice for the contest with my partner.
  10. I’m just trying not to piss my partner off so we can make it to the stage.
  11. Do you think my dance has gotten better because now your dance has elevated and you’re able to understand more of what I am trying to do?
  12. You know she’s coming with those legs.

So far this year, no public smack talking. Maybe wait for it?
