Eight Days of Stepping in Chicago to Celebrate My Birthday
I have celebrated my birthday in Chicago for the past five years. 2024 is my first time writing about my birthday celebration on the blog instead of on social media. Every May I spend one…
Now a nationwide community of steppers, traveling to step in a different city every weekend is a possibility for those that are willing and can afford it. This page catalogs stepper weekend event experiences. Learn what you should plan for if you want to travel to step.

Here is my recap of the StyleMasters 2020 Weekend Event in Virginia hosted by Nyce Entertainment. It’s taking steppers weekend events to a new level on the east coast.
Dione Barnes, my fellow Virginia stepper, talks about her trip to Chicago.
At the announcement of the Black & Bling fire sale, I learned that I Love Steppin’ 11 Anniversary and the fifth Annual Black and Bling are scheduled for the same dates – April 25-28, 2019. I approached Devin Smith about the conflict and our conversation ended with “Next year, steppers are just going to have to make a choice.”
Cynthia Catoe-Warren has been steppin’ Chicago style for a year now and is one of the steppers in my local area Hampton Roads, Virginia. I was thrilled when she told me she made it to her first weekend event in Arlington, Virginia at Steppin’ In Our Nation’s Capital Steppers – even if it was just for one day.
At Big Al’s 2012 Steppin’ 4 Life Charity Ball when they did the state roll call I insisted on over the mic recognition of Virginia presence. I was one person in the crowd from Virginia hooting and hollaring. From that moment, many steppers called me Miss Virginia and I answered to it proudly. I got used to traveling solo and made friends in every city I visited but since 2012 there has been amazing change in the Virginia Chicago style steppin’ community.
I made a promise to myself to visit Chicago this year on a week when there was no World’s Largest or major event going on in the city. So said, so done. I spent five days in Chicago in the middle of March and there is so much to say about that time. During my trip, I had a chance to sit and talk with Michael “West Side Mike” Bush.
I think I have finally recuperated from this year’s Heritage Ball weekend because it is truly a “no sleep weekend.” There are tons of gorgeous photos and videos from the event all over Facebook. I had my special moments – some caught on camera and others not on camera that made the 2017 Heritage Ball a memorable time for me.

In years past, there were not too many steppers events in the latter part of the year. I would close out the year with the Christmas Colors Ball but I have not heard anything about it happening in 2016. October, November, December and January are my months to save some money for next year’s events. Not so much anymore. There is much more going on that I know about right through the end of the year and I plan to be a part of some of it.
Sarah Teagle and the Ball Committee made this a memorable time. I do a bit more than a recap here, but instead – a review with ratings. When I walk away from an event weekend these are the things I have paid attention to and these factors make for a good or bad experience for me. If you agree or disagree, tell it.
