Reading Time: 2 minutes

For the new year weekend I traveled to Atlanta to attend Andre Blackwell’s Fifth Friday and Capricorn Explosion. It seemed that all roads lead to Atlanta to celebrate the weekend and I wasn’t going to miss this.

I arrived at the height of the party, late Friday night.  It was incredibly crowded. Andre Blackwell if you didn’t realize it, a lot of people love you and want to party with you. You are going to need a bigger venue next year. I missed dinner but I was there to step. There were some guests “on another level” literally, a medley of out of town guests and Atlanta folks. I heard from at least two other people that they weren’t sure if they could go “up there” or not. Despite the separation, I had a chance to dance with men from out of town and locally, and I had a great time to start the weekend off in Atlanta. Thank you Dre for being a gracious and thankful host and taking the time to greet guests.

Next stop, the day party at Sky Boxx, Shawn James’ birthday celebration that I heard about the day of. Surprise, weekend highlight! It was my first time at the Sky Boxx. The venue was perfect to lounge and socialize with other steppers.  There was a good size, spacious dance floor and food menu.  Now, I have got to especially mention, DJ Travis Lee.  I did not want to leave because he turned it up late in the party. I danced the most at this set and heard several dusted off, different songs – new and old school- that I enjoyed steppin’ to. I am going to have to hit you up for a mix. Shawn James and Keenan, were the most gracious and welcoming hosts.

I enjoyed Saturday night but hoped for a dressy, stepper sharp affair for New Year’s Eve but it was laid back and most importantly again there were so many people.  I still had a blast and it was a great time to meet new folks and get to all the friends I did not get a chance to connect with the night before. This was my first time ringing in the new year with fellow steppers and I enjoyed it very much.  I will definitely do it again.

I expected a chill Sunday set, and for a $5 cover I got way more than I set out to experience. The party was in full swing until after 12 midnight.  I know DJ Shorty Smooth must have been tired after Friday and Saturday, but he was still going full force, smiling and keeping us dancing. From beginning to end Shorty Smooth and DJ Sampsonite took us on a fantastic, musical journey all evening long. And, just that one light flip switch set the perfect chill mood for dance and conversation.  Thank you for insisting on it Shorty Smooth.

I must close with recognizing one unforgettable presence for the weekend- Tracy Blackwell, Dre’s beautiful wife. She killed it head to toe Saturday and Sunday.  Tres chic and classic. She was beaming even while hosting and working. Congratulations on the recognition. Dre, Tracy, Dre & Company thank you for the hospitality. You know how to party and I was glad to be a part of it.
