Etiquette #2 “Smile”

When I started steppin’ it was easy for me to stick with it. I was happy dancing and having fun! To smile is easy when all I was worried about is getting the basic pattern right. I am still working on my basic now but also trying to polish my turns and footwork. Regardless of how much I am calculating to improve my dance I want to have a smile on my face. I have to remember to wear my stepper smile.
Gentlemen, if we are dancing I hope you are having fun too. The best indicator is the look on your face and mostly your smile. Some people in their journey (myself included) focus so much on the count, technique, and execution, we forget the fun. I remember in the middle of our dance at this year’s Heritage Ball, the gentleman I was dancing with whispered to me “I can see you counting. Are you having fun?” I instantly smiled to save face for the rest of the song.
When You Don’t Smile
Remember to flash a stepper smile every now and again. If you are intensely focused on the dance and not me, your partner, I am wondering “is dancing with me that difficult or are you even having fun?” I remember as a beginner how easily my partner’s face reflected if I was doing what he expected and if I did something wrong or right! So, “smile” whether or not your partner is killin’ it. A smile can be the reassurance someone needs that day to finish the dance to the last second of the song and feel that his or her progress is noticed.
