A first dance is not a date. Nothing is wrong with light conversation and some steppers actually appreciate it because it breaks the ice. Steppin’ is a social dance. Men and women want to dance, enjoy the song, and “listen” to the music too. I enjoy the story behind most songs. A lot of people meet on the dance floor and that is the best part of this dance community-we willingly and frequently from song to song dance with different people. But, let’s talk about the stepper who just keeps talking while dancing.
Many people make lasting connections on the dance floor. But, I mention this etiquette because of my recent encounter. I danced with a gentleman at a stepper set and at the end of it, I could not remember one word of or even the name of the song. However, I remember the lengthy interrogation. During this four-minute moment he asked me “thirteen” questions:
- Where are you from originally?
- Do you go home often?
- What do you do for a living?
- When is the last time you went home?
- Have you been on a cruise?
- Have you been on Carnival Cruise line?
- What was your favorite cruise?
- Do you like the Bahamas?
- Did you get everything you “wanted” for Christmas?
- Did you get everything you “needed” for Christmas?
- Do you have children?
- Are you going to leave Virginia soon?
- What is holding you back in Virginia?
Just Dance
My smile disappeared completely by question 3. My short answers were not enough of a hint. At many events and sets, ladies and gentlemen sit for a while between dances. That time may be better to strike up an in-depth conversation “if the person is willing to participate” or ask the person out for a deeper conversation. There is a time and place for everything. When we step on the dance floor, let us dance! It’s simple etiquette to be mindful of if we are talking while dancing.
